The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Mr. Martin Eson-Benjamin, has finally performed the sod-cutting ceremony for on-going rehabilitation works, at five deprived schools in the Kwahu North District.
The five beneficiary schools are the Ekye Amanfrom Local Authority Primary and Junior High School, Amankwakrom Roman Catholic Primary and JHS, Mem Chefiri Primary and JHS, Somsie District Authority Primary and JHS and Kwame Dwamena Primary and JHS.
Speaking at the programme, Mr. Eson Benjamin stated that his outfit considered the said schools, because they had not seen any major rehabilitation works, since their establishment years ago.
According to him, the ceremony was to indicate an important step, in the implementation of the Community Service Activity of the Rural Development Project Component of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Ghana programme.
Explaining the objectives of the programme, he said the main goal was to reduce rural poverty, through agricultural transformation.
He continued that the success in agriculture, as a business, could only attained when the farming communities also benefited from improved school infrastructure for children of farmers in the farming communities.
"In order to achieve success in agriculture, and reduce the incidence of poverty in the farming communities, certain infrastructure, services and benefits must be brought to the doorsteps of the people," he indicated.
He mentioned good roads, schools, electricity, sanitation facilities, potable drinking water, as well as credit facilities for the farmers.
He advised residents of the beneficiary communities, to show an interest in the maintenance of the buildings, adding that the success of Ghana's MCA programme would depend on the interest, vigilance and support of the communities.
He also reiterated MiDA's readiness to work with farmers in the district, and assist them to improve their productivity, which would lead to improving the living standards of the rural folks.
On his part, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Mr. Solomon Yaw Fordjour, explained that residents in the area have to rejoice over the occasion, since the district had been neglected for far too long.
He explained that the MCA Fund would not only address the agricultural needs of the people in the area, but also take into account, the education, health, water, sanitation and environmental concerns of the district.
