President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the people of Elmina and the Central region as a whole for the massive support that they continue to give to his government. "Central region has been the heart of my government", he said.

Speaking to chiefs and people of Elmina on Monday, President Kufuor said he would never forget the role of the Central region in the New Patriotic Party's success, due to their tremendous support in the 2000 and 2004 elections.

He noted that as a reciprocal gesture, he has also fulfilled all the pledges his government made to the people of Elmina, including its elevation from district to municipal status.

The President also inspected the new Elmina Palace which is currently under construction and pledged his support to finish the project in time. He noted that it was good for the people of Elmina to have a palace befitting their status. He said his wife, Madam Theresa Kufuor is a native of Elmina and that gives him the zeal to support the people of Elmina in all their developmental projects.

He pleaded with the chiefs and people of Elmina to judge his achievements and vote for Nana Akufo-Addo, who he strongly believes would take over from him as the next President. He also asked the people to vote for Nana Ato Arthur as their parliamentary candidate for the area.

On his part, Nana Kodwo Condua thanked President Kufuor for his kind gesture in supporting the Palace project and other developments in the town, citing the dredging of the Benya Lagoon and the fishing habour as examples. He said Elmina ha profited from a lot of developmental projects since President Kufuor assumed office in January 7, 2001.
