Ghana: GT University College Turns Two

The Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) has established the Faculty of Telecommunication Engineering and Informatics, to provide class education in modern telecommunication networks and systems, and prepare students for professional practice in the telecom industry.

The university offers a broad spectrum of professional development courses, ranging from short courses and seminars to comprehensive certificate programs and customs training for private and public organizations, through its centre for professional development.

Dr. Osei K. Darkwa, Principal of the GTUC, said due to high academic excellence, it has attracted students from various countries around the world. This year, the college has offered admission to 620 students, out of which 435 have completed registration formalities.

According to the Principal, to accommodate the ever-increasing student population, the university had leased additional facilities within its vicinity, notably the GTUC Police and the Abeka campuses, and both campuses can admit about 500 students.

He said the University was collaborating with some universities abroad, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, in a number of core areas, such as academic and research cooperation, capacity-building, information technology development, faculty and student exchange, and the exchange of experience information and best practices.

Mr. Darkwa noted that with financial support from the GETFund, the university had been able to acquire a bus, and would be funding the construction of a new technology building and classroom complex, that is expected to house about 1,000 students.

In addition, the Principal noted that the GETFund was providing funding for the a number of technology resources, like is computers, telecom labs, printers and facsimile machines, a study of food courts, as well as the provision of bore holes for the school.

The university used the occasion to launch new projects, to enhance tuition in the school, like a video conferencing centre, which would be linked up with affiliates from other universities, and through this technology the university would be able to recruit virtual lecturers, to teach without physically being present in the university. On revenue generation, the Principal said the video conferencing centre would be open to the public for renting, to enable the school earn some income to boost its revenue base.
