Liberia: Ship With 108 Persons Rescued At Sea

A cargo vessel, The Princess with a total of 108 persons has been rescued on high sea after developing mechanical problem.

The Liberia National Red Cross Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Disaster Preparedness Department and The World Health Organization (WHO) with support from the Management of the National Port Authority (NPA) on Sunday, August 17, 2008 rescued a cargo vessel which had developed a mechanical problem, and was at the verge of sinking.

Accordingly the vessel, had a total of 108 persons on board including 98 passengers and 10 crew members.

It was headed for the Southeastern city of Cape Palmas in Maryland County. The passengers included 36 men, 34 women, and 28 children.

The Liberian Red Cross, upon receiving the SOS message immediately put together a Rapid Response Team which included 8 staff along with 6 volunteers using two ambulances and a jeep.

The intervention team administered ORS (Oral Re-hydration Salt) provided by the MOH and water and light refreshment provided by the owner of the vessel.

Few of the passengers were mildly dehydrated as a result of vomiting on board the vessel. One person suffered severe headache and was later treated at the Redemption Hospital on Bushrod Island, Monrovia.

The victims were later transferred to their various homes or destinations in local transport vehicles hired by the owner of the vessel.
