Zimbabwe: Maskiri Collaborates With Victoria Falls-Based Artistes

21 August 2008

Harare — URBAN grooves artiste Maskiri has collaborated with Victoria Falls-based artistes on an album titled Machikichori Volume 1 recorded in June at Studio 6 by Iwomba Music.

The album, which has 14 tracks features, the duo of Flogun and Icing Sugar (whose trade name is Wasted Talent), Kiri (real name Christopher Mpepoimba) and Xzee.

Iwomba Music and Studio 6 director-cum-producer Mpepoimba said Maskiri is no stranger to Victoria Falls after his collaboration with Mirro Neshamba last year on her album So-So.

"Maskiri happened to be available at the time when the project was decided. He is also the only Harare-based artiste working with Studio 6," said Mpepoimba.

He also said Maskiri's song Sorry has clean lyrics and families can listen to it without fear of obscene stuff.

"We sat down with him and told him that we wanted to put together something the whole family can listen to. He agreed," said Mpepoimba.

Machikichori Volume 1 is Studio 6's second album after Mirro's So-So done last year.

"There are two tracks on So-So, Nditaurire and Unovhaira Nei, which are currently doing quite well on radio," said Mpepoimba.

He also said there have been discussions with more urban grooves artistes who are keen to record with Studio 6, among them Pauline of Mafriq who wants to do a solo project.

Mpepoimba said the studio saved expenses for artistes in Victoria Falls who used to travel all the way to Harare or Bulawayo to have their music recorded.

He said it has also given artistes confidence since they can now perform the songs at live shows thereby giving people relief since the area does not receive any ZBC signals.

The studio, which boasts of state-of-the-art equipment, took three years to put up.

"I am fortunate because I travel a lot. So I assembled some of the equipment over three years," Mpepoimba explained.

The major hurdle, he said, was marketing which is done by Gramma Records because as a small company it's still difficult to penetrate the industry.

Plug tracks on the album could be Maskiri's Sorry and Kiri's Machikichori.
