The Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) and the World Bank have come to the aid of the Traditional Council of Liberia, donating a modern car

The donation is an effort aimed at enabling the council to step up its campaign of monitoring and educating people on the extraction and sale of national resources as well as revenues.

Making the presentation of the Mitsubishi Pickup to the National Traditional Council Aug 19 at the Finance Ministry, World Bank Country Manager, Ohene Owusu Nyanin said the gift was an effort intended to share the resources of Liberia that the Bank through the LEITI is employing by empowering the Council, to be able to continue its outreach activities.

Mr. Nyanini said it was important that all Liberians have informed knowledge about revenues generated from their resources, adding "Empowering the Traditional leaders to playing a meaningful role in the process was good."

According to him, "The people are part and parcel of every engagement in the distribution of their resources, and should therefore not be left behind in the process."

He said the World Bank was assisting the traditional leaders so "they could assist the people of Liberia in empowering their life in the country."

Also speaking at the occasion, Deputy Finance Minister for Debt Management, Roderick Smith said the Government of Liberia was happy with the efforts of the World Bank by bringing the chiefs on board for the benefit of the country and its people.
