Ghana: Let Short Memory of Citizens Be Your Guide

Kofi Agyepong

21 August 2008

Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, National Campaign Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asked his party members to be mindful of the short memories of Ghanaians if they want to retain power.

As a result of this, he said, NPP members have a duty to tell Ghanaians the gains and achievements of the NPP on one-on-one basis, from house to house, to the electorate, so as to enable them retain power.

The Campaign Director was speaking at the inauguration of the Patriotic Ladies Club in Accra, the sole aim of which is to campaign for the NPP at the grassroots level.

Dr Apraku said, "We did not win 2004 elections massively because we were so complacent... I am saying today that we need to be very meticulous because this race is very competitive...We have our achievements to tell the people and we must tell our success story."

The NDC, he said, is out there telling a lot of lies to Ghanaians and NPP members need to be out there too to challenge those lies.

Dr. Apraku said the NPP was not in government in 2000, so had nothing to talk about except to make promises, "but today we are in government and have achieved a lot."

He said though the NPP has always pulled record crowds at its rallies in different parts of the country, there is a crucial need to decentralize the campaign and meet the electorate in their homes and at the individual level.

The Campaign Director lauded the establishment of the club and said strong women-based support for the party would translate into a definite victory in December. "Women have an exceptional ability to organize and persuade people to change their minds, in fact you play an important role in party politics," he said.

The president of the Club, Mrs. Mabel Sarpong said one of the cardinal points of the association is to canvass for more support for the NPP.

Threatening comments and statements from some NDC leading members, she said, were signs of desperation on their part. "And we don't have to stop at consolidating the power that we have," she said.

Mrs. Sarpong said the club has embarked on an intensive membership drive to recruit more members for the party.

The National Campaign Director pledged to give the Patriotic Ladies Club GH¢30 to support their campaign and also gave them 300 pieces of Nana Akufo-Addo branded T-Shirts.

The door-to door concept of campaigning was first introduced by the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when he begun his campaign.

It was heavily criticized by the NPP, but Mrs. Sarpong said, "Ours would be more effective one."
