Kismayo — At least 70 people were killed and 156 wounded in clashes between Islamist insurgents and local clan militia in a southern Somali city, officials and witnesses said Friday.
The fighting in Kismayo, 500 kilometres (300 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu, erupted late Wednesday.
"At least 70 people, most of them fighters, were killed in the clashes which appear be over control of the town," local elder resident Mohamed Osman Yusuf told Mareeg online. "Some of the dead bodies were only discovered this morning."
Local resident Mohamed Abdi said four of the 10 known fatalities were civilians who were caught in the crossfire.
Ali Hasan, a doctor at Kismayo hospital, said that additional wounded in the fighting had been admitted for treatment since Wednesday.
