Ghana/South Africa: Quartey's Dream Finally Realized

22 August 2008

South Africa-based Ghanaian defender, Jonathan "JJ" Quartey who plays for Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League says his dream to represent his country has finally become a reality.

Quartey made his long awaited debut for Black Stars during the 1-1 draw against Tanzania on Wednesday.

Jonathan who has represented his country both in the under-20 and under-23 levels was called up by new Black Stars coach, Milovan "Milo" Rojevic.

The defender landed back in South Africa on Thursday.

"It is an honour to represent the country. It has always been my dream to pull on that famous Black Stars jersey and it happened on Wednesday.

"Some of the senior players did not make it to the game and the coach decided to give the younger guys a chance. I do think though I did well as I played the whole 90 minutes," he told Chiefs' website.

"I am ready to compete for my place in the team even when the senior guys are back. The coach told us after the game that we all did well as we came back from a goal behind to equalise late in the game" he said.

Quartey will resume training with his teammates in Naturena on Friday.
