Ghana: People of Taviefe Greatful to 66 Artillery Regiment

Ho — The people of Taviepe, a farming community in the Ho Municipality, have expressed their gratitude to the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho, for its contribution to improving the health of the people, without being requested for such an assistance, which they said, will never be forgotten.

According to the people who spoke to Volta File, during a two day screening exercise by thirty-three medical personnel from the Regiment, 37 Military Hospital, and personnel from the US Naval Medical Research Unit, even though they suffered from skin diseases, and other illnesses, which they were unaware of until the visit of the team.

The team, which included eye and skin specialist nurses, as well as general medical doctors, treated eye problems and skin diseases, which were prevalent among the people.

A skin disease, which is popularly called "Agbamekanu," was a major health problem in the area.

Speaking to the media, the Head of the US Naval Medical Team, Lt Commander Karl Kronmann, said the exercise was a follow-up to a similar exercise carried out last year, in collaboration with the 66 Artillery Regiment, as part of its civil-military relations in the region.

He noted that such programmes would not only enhance relations between the military and civil society, it would also go a long way to create awareness for the people to visit the hospital frequently, to update their health without necessarily falling sick.

The Community Relations Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, Capt. George Dottey, said the Regiment had put in place a programme to support needy communities in their development efforts, noting that it had achieved much, since its programme of activities impacted positively on the people.

The Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery, Lt, Col. Emmanuel Kotia, and the Head of Public Health Division of the 37 Military Hospital, Lt. Commander Nyarku, also participated in the screening exercise, which saw over 1,000 people treated, while others, whose conditions were serious, referred to the hospital.
