Sierra Leone: Berewa to Work With Koroma for Peace

Freetown — Former vice president Solomon Ekuma Berewa has accepted to work with President Ernest Bai Koroma and the All Peoples Congress in order to maintain peace and stability in the country.

Berewa's decision came after the executive director of the coalition of civil society and human rights activists in Sierra Leone Charles Mambu called on Bishop George Beguzzi of the Diocese of Makeni and former president Dr Tejan Kabbah to help resolve the recent political impasse in the country.

"From the word go, I have expressed the need for peace and I will not like any thing that will affect the hard-won peace in this country. Shortly after the elections, I called on my party members that they should accept the results and respect the leadership of President Ernest Bai Koroma.

"However, other parties should stop attacking the SLPP office. They should give space to the opposition. I am ready to talk peace at any given time," he said.

Minister of information and communications Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said former state actors have played their parts and it was time for them to take the backseat.

"We cannot call on former President Kabbah or Berewa to run the affairs of the state," he said.

Mambu said the recent attacks on journalists at state house whilst performing their legitimate functions was unacceptable and called for an immediate investigation.

"On the day when the SLPP office was attacked, I went to the scene, I saw people dressed in black attires. Some even promised to come back. I reached at the scene before the police could arrive.

"After the elections we have never witnessed an SLPP attack on the APC office. So we have to say the truth," he said.

He said one of the reasons that were responsible for the frequent political violence was the hate messages that were being aired by political party radio stations.

"We are recommending that the SLBS be restructured to ensure that active political parties have equal airtime. These stations are contributing to the escalation of political violence, which will destroy the good image of Sierra Leone," he concluded.
