Sierra Leone: Education Ministry Trains Port Loko Teachers

Port Loko — Deputy director of education Port Loko district has told Concord Times that his directorate has engaged in building the capacity of untrained and unqualified teachers through the SABABU education project.

Ishmail J. Sankoh said the project is a four-week training for a total of 200 teachers from the 11 chiefdoms in Port Loko District adding that the training is focused on language arts, mathematic, social studies and other core subjects.

Sankoh said the resource persons are drawn from the universities and the teacher training colleges and their roles are basically to teach participants the knowledge and skills so as to improve their level of service delivery.

He said there are plans to conduct a dewarming and health related programme which will target heads and senior teachers.

Sankoh said the distribution of learning and teaching materials has been a very serious problem despite the fact that Sababu project contracted Cord Sierra Leone, Ansarul development services and Plan Sierra Leone as service providers.

He said getting good results in public examinations can only be achieved, if parents are fully committed to the educations of their children noting that children should also be committed in pursuing their educational goals and aspirations.

Sankoh said pupils must put their priorities straight while government should re-introduce the payment of particularly the remote areas.
