Sierra Leone: Port Loko Calls for Development

Port loko — Port Loko district council chairman has called for infrastructural development of the district.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected local councilors and district chairman last weekend at a ceremony held at the district council hall, Ahmid Munirr Fofana said one of the big challenges facing the district is meeting the expectations of the people.

He stressed on the need for the previous regime to properly explain the programs undertaken in the district, the successes, failures and challenges encountered.

"There is need to know the number of bridges and kilometers of road maintenance that was targeted and how much of that was achieved," he said adding that performance targets must be able to provide statistical information in order for the council to do a strategic development plan.

Fofanah disclosed plans to develop tourist sites such as Bunce Island in Lokomasama, Bai Bureh's shrine and the Portuguese Port at Magbele and Rokon in the Marampa and Masimra chiefdoms respectively, that are of significance to the country.

He said his council will try to develop the local police and court clerks as the two are vital unit in the maintenance of law and order as well as revenue collection.

Presidential affairs minister Alhaji Alpha Kanu observed that Port Loko is renowned for different forms of protests, citing the case of Bai Bureh Kablai and the 'hut tax war' adding such protests implies that the people of Port Loko are aware of their rights.

Deputy Minister of Education, youth and sports Dr. Algasimu Jah said the district bears some of the most deprived chiefdoms in the country despite the fact that it is closer to Freetown .

Out gone chairman John Bob Amara catalogued the achievements of the council under his chairmanship including; the rehabilitation and reconstruction of schools health centres, bridges, roads together with the district library and the district administrative complex that was under construction.

Thanks gentlemen, I mean Dr. Jah and Mr. Alpha Kanu for recognizing that Port Loko has lagged behind in almost every area of development, such as infrastructural, education, poverty etc. It is about time we put aside the politics of S.I. Koroma, Karay the thug and other such none achievers. We should focus on development of the district from which the British carved out the Western Area and made it one of their colonies. During the war many of my kinfolk in Koya were ruthlesly massacared by the RUF and the then rebel Sierra Leone Army. One of my villages, Rolal in Koya literally ceased to exist after 63 of my relatives were murdered in cold blood on March 15 1995. The war is over I hope we can put some of the brightest minds from Port Loko district to work to brainstorm and contribute to the development of the district Please do not forget to include those of us in the diaspora. Congrats Dr.. Alghasimu Jah !
