Sokoto — A legal practitioner in Sokoto, Barister Jibril Uwadiae has filed a suit at a Sokoto Upper Sharia Court against his client and former Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) candidate for the April, 2007 governorship election in Sokoto State, Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi in connection with non-payment of the balance of N14million legal fees in respect of election petitions.
Joined in the suit in the criminal breach of trust were Alhaji Maigari's running mate in the said election and former deputy governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Abdullahi Chisso Datijo and DPP lawyer, Barister Suleiman Usman. According to the suit No. CR/153/2008, filed on Wednesday, 20th August, 2008 before the court, the complainant stated that he handled the election petitions relating to the members of the House of Assembly. Sokoto, the House of Representatives and the governorship elections for the respondents in their cases at the Election Tribunal in Sokoto. The complainant further stated that the money meant for the payment of the legal fees was released to the former DPP governorship candidate, Alhaji Dingyadi for onward payment and that the payment was not made despite repeated demands.
Acccording to the complainant in the suit, the three respondents who were in the legal committee in the election petitions resisted all diplomatic moves to avoid " this very shameful stage of litigation." The complainant, therefore, prayed the Sokoto Upper Sharia Court to determine the matter and make an order of compensation in the sum from which the breach of trust arose. Meanwhile, the court has fixed Tuesday, 26th August, 2008 for mention of the suit.
