Zimbabwe: Chunga's Gunners Meet Savanna Eagles in CBZ FA Cup First Round

23 August 2008

Harare — MOSES "Bambo" Chunga has his roots deeply embedded at the blue side of town where he is a cult hero owing to his exploits during his playing days.

Dynamos is where Chunga's heart lies but you could say he has found a new home and will make his official return to the team he helped assemble just a few seasons ago.

Chunga will reunite with Gunners as they take on Northern Region Division One side Savanna Eagles in a CBZ FA Cup first round match at Rimuka tomorrow.

Chunga left Gunners three years back as duty called on him to save Dynamos from relegation and relations between him and the club seemingly soured.

But he has made up with Harare bankers Cuthbert Chitima and Sween Mushonga, the owners of the club, and the three men will now reunite to lead a project they started just a few years back.

Chunga has been out of football since his departure from Lengthens and this will be his first match since he left the club.

The former Warriors captain will find a Gunners side that has a lot of potential but was just clearly lacking direction in recent weeks.

The young talents of captain Zhaimu Jambo and Ovidy Karuru will give Chunga the right platform to lead the club's revival.

The match against Savanna Eagles is definitely a must-win for Gunners, they can't afford to bow out at the first hurdle in the country's premier club competition.

But the competition gets underway this afternoon with Monomotapa taking on Motor Action at Rufaro this afternoon.

This is easily the pick of the weekend

as the Mighty Bulls seek revenge following their 0-1-league loss to the leaders just a few weeks back.

The Mighty Bulls are hard pressed to win some silverware especially having not qualified for the ABC Sup8r.

For years, the Mighty Bulls have fought on all battles but they have only the Independence Cup to talk about, which lies lonely in their clubhouse trophy cabinet.

They have often shown promise every year but have come short every time. The team has really betrayed club owners Eric and Liz Rosen.

The couple is very passionate about football, you ought to see Liz every time the Mighty Bulls are in action and doesn't she deserve a little more than the heartbreaks?

Maybe the real bulls should stand up and be counted against the difficult team of Norman Mapeza's creation.

Monomotapa's form has just been awesome. They have a decent squad that can beat anyone in the league and could just shock the league with a double.

But while the cup gets underway, it has once again been rocked by a fresh problem as Underhill pulled out citing transport costs.

The Beitbridge side were scheduled to take on Eastern Region Division One side Eagles at Rudhaka but informed the league chiefs of their decision to pull out.

The Premiership club's decision effectively saw them being slapped with a ban as they will not be considered for next season's edition.

Premier Soccer League fixtures secretary Godfrey Japajapa, who is also a member of the Zifa competitions committee, said Underhill had also been slapped with a one-year suspension from taking part in the CBZ FA Cup following their late withdrawal.

Japajapa said Underhill would also forfeit the prize money that would have been awarded to the tournament's first round losers.

"Eagles have officially advanced to the next round of the CBZ FA Cup following the decision by Underhill Football Club to withdraw from the competition.

"Underhill wrote to us and indicated that they had played their last two league games away to Shooting Stars and Eastern Lions and were therefore unable to fulfil their CBZ FA Cup first round match against Eagles unless they were to play that game at home.

"They cited travelling costs, costs of food and accommodation as the reasons for their withdrawal and we as a committee have accepted their withdrawal.

In addition we have suspended them from the 2009 edition of the CBZ FA Cup and they will also forfeit the purse that is given to the first round losers.

"While we sympathise with Underhill given that they basically have to travel for each of their home matches as their natural home ground in Beitbridge is not yet approved, there is nothing we can do.

"The sponsors are providing fuel to travelling teams as part of the package and we are happy with that. We wish that Underhill speedily develop their home ground in Beitbridge so that there not faced with similar problems in future," Japajapa said.
