Michael Essien is in line for the Uefa Club Midfielder of the Year award when the European football governing body announces the star performers from last season's Champions League on Thursday.
The Ghanaian ace, who was outstanding for Chelsea in the run up to their penalty loss against Manchester United in Moscow, has been nominated for the best midfielder award which is voted for by the coaches of the 16 clubs that reached the knockout stage of the Champions League.
Essien will, however, be up against formidable competition in the form of his Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas of Arsenal and Manchester United's Paul Scholes.
Chelsea and United dominate the nominations for the awards after the epic Final in Moscow. There are five Chelsea players nominated for various awards, while six United players are in the running.
