Botswana: Buffaloes Seek Another Upset

Gaborone — The 2008 Coca-Cola Cup has been described as one of the most dramatic in years.

This is because of the rise of minnows like Mochudi Buffaloes who have claimed the scalps of Gaborone giants, Township Rollers and Gaborone United (GU) on the way to the semi-finals. After their hard-fought win over GU last weekend, it remains to be seen whether the First Division side will pull another surprise by knocking-out Premier League side, Uniao Flamengo Santos. The two sides meet in the Coke semi-final at the National Stadium on Sunday. If they beat Santos, Buffaloes will become the second First Division South outfit to reach the final of the knock-out competition after Mokgosi Young Fighters who lost 2-1 to Notwane in the 1997 decider before a packed National Stadium.

This week, Buffaloes were confident that they can achieve the feat. "We have been preparing like in the past but the only difference this time around is that Santos are a very good side tactically and we will have to be cautious. They have a youthful squad which will prove tough for my players but I have confidence that we can match them," said Buffaloes' coach Moshe Koitsiwe. If he guides Buffaloes to the final, Koitsiwe will become an instant hero in Mochudi where he has already made history.

This year might prove very fruitful for Mochudi, as both Buffaloes and their brothers Mochudi Centre Chiefs are likely to meet in the final. While Buffaloes are making their maiden appearance, Chiefs are in the semis for the second time. "We are aware that we have one foot in the final, and that should serve as a motivating factor for my players," Koitsiwe said. This weekend, Buffaloes welcome back their hard-working midfielder Thabang 'Banda' Tsheko from suspension. The player is expected to provide the coach with options in the middle of the pack. With the likes of Jacob Jerry who scored a stunning winner against GU and Onkokame Matsela in fine form, it seems the Mochudi lads are ready to make more history. Since the competition started, Buffaloes' defence has been impressive with George Mponiki, Matsela, Olefile Modise and Kenneth Setshwane standing tall.

Santos' veteran player, Parker Mampori said they will accord their less-heralded opponents the respect they deserve. "This is a cup game and anything is possible. Buffaloes have proven that they are not in the semi-finals by default and we are going into that game with a positive mind. It is a do or die for us," he said. Last weekend, Santos had to wait for post-match penalties to overcome Police XI. This time, they hope to finish the game in 90 minutes. Ngele brothers Godfrey and Mogakolodi will once again play an important role for Santos. The other key players for the Gabane side are Donald Lopang, Pius Kolagano and Khumo Motlhabane. Kick off is 3pm.
