Uganda: How Western Saw Off Its Rivals

The adage, "the early bird catches the worm" perfectly describes Western's triumph in the Kampala Casino/Tusker Malt Lager co-sponsored 3-day Inter Regional Golf tournament over the weekend.

Western, were under pressure to win the prestigious tournament for a third consecutive time but didn't allow their panic buttons to be pushed. They did the basics right. They prepared early by motivating and mobilising their team and fielding an ambitious and success-hungry team.

Team captain Edwin Tumusiime told Daily Monitor that it wasn't a surprise when they took a 36-strokes lead after the first round.

"We had worked hard and restructured many things behind the scenes. Many of our players were young and the onus was on them to prove to the old guns that had been left out of the team that they could perform," said Tumusiime.

The pressure moments prevailed on the final day with surprise package Eastern forcing their way to sniff at victory but remained short by just 17 strokes.

"People used to take us for jokers yet we have plotting for sometime. We are happy with the way we've played and shall work harder next year," said Eastern's Daniel Kagwe.

John Waigo's Northern region, who began as favourites, endured a dip in form and finished third after carding 3,014 nett. Buganda tailed again.
