Kenya: Kitale Player Eyes Walker Trip to Perth

Nairobi — Kitale's Maria Litamoi stands a good chance of a back-to-back trip to the annual Johnnie Walker Classic International Pro-Am, to be held in Perth, Australia, next year.

During the second leg of the 2008/2009 Johnnie Walker Golf Series at Eldoret Golf Club, Litamoi, playing off handicap 15, posted 37 stableford points to qualify for next January's grand finale.

The top five amateurs -- three in 'A' division and one each from 'B' and 'C' division, will travel to Perth to represent the country in the Johnnie Walker Classic.

Litamoi was among five Kenyan golfers who represented Kenya in this year's event held in New Delhi, India. She finished behind George Njoroge in the 'B' division, where the third qualifier was Kennth Serem.

Leading the 'A' division was home player Milton Ambunya, who fired 40 points to win ahead of Mike Arusei, Andrew Chelogoi and Kitale's Emmanuel Omonya. Qualifying from 'C' division were Geoffrey Boit, Anabwani Amino and Daya Kalsi.

At Nyeri, home player Benjamin Inoti returned 41 points to win the Zain BlackBerry Golf Challenge. Inoti posted 19 points on the outward nine and 22 points on the inward nine.

Wachira Macharia was second with 37 points after a three way countback with Martin Ndegwa and Charles Mwaniki. Stella Mwangi on 35 points took the women's prize while Zain's Albert Luseno took the staff prize on a low 22-points. The guest winner was Charles Gacheru on 31 points.

At Kiambu, John Kamugi carded 43 stableford points to top the list of 11 qualifiers in the Safaricom Festival of Golf qualifying round. He beat James Ngalawa by one point while David Kimani on 41 beat L.W. Karau on countback to finish third. In fifth place was Ben Gaithuma with 40 points after a countback with Eliud Thuku and G. Chege.

The staff prize went to M. Githiaka on 32, G.W. Muigua claimed the junior prize with 37 points while Muthaiga's Collins Omondi shot 39 to emerge the best guest.

At Muthaiga, Mary Karano shot gross 80 to claim the Silver Division title during the Ladies Open sponsored by Dasani Water. The handicap three Karano beat Jane Njoroge on countback. Florence Maina was third on 83.

The nett title went to Sheena Round-Turner with a brilliant nett 67 ahead of Shaila Mauladad on 69 and Jaini Shah who posted nett 71.

The Bronze title went to Sheela Shah of Sigona on 93 gross after beating Vet Lab's Mary Maingi on countback. Muthaiga's Njeri Mugo was third with 95 gross.

The nett title remained at Muthaiga with Yusra Butt on 68, T. Ndungu of Railway was second on 72 while Mary Gachui was third on 73 nett.

In the ladies medal foursomes, Florence Maina and Jane Njoroge won the gross with 80 ahead of Agnes Wanjiru and L. Armitage, while Rose Koome and Mary Cox were third on 86.

The handicap winners were S.Esmail and F. Esmail on 76 nett after beating A. Thompson and Salma Mazrui on countback. Shaila Mauladad and Jaswant Vohora were third.

The Mixed Foursomes title went to Royal's J.Fang Xi and Collinis Omondi on 40 points after a countback with A. Njau and Paul Thuo.

Yusra Butt and Akif Butt were third on 39 points and the nines went to T.Ndungu and J. Gitonga on 20 and Florence Maina and J.W. Njaaga with 22 points.
