Somalia: One Dies in Mogadishu Clash

Mogadishu — At least one civilian person has been killed and more than others wounded in an armed confrontation between Somali government troops and islamist fighters in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday residents said.

Both sides used rocket-propelled grenade launchers, anti-aircraft machine guns and assault rifles in the firefight at the city's animal market.

The civlian person died when stray bullets struck him near the warred areas.

The fighting has broken out in Shirkole and Gulwadayasha areas in Mogadishu.

No comments could be available from the warred sides on this incident.

Eyewitnesses said the fighting broke out when policemen at a checkpoint near the Gulwadayasha have been ambushed by armed islamist groups.

In recent days, as well as fighting between rival groups put in bewilderment situation to the civilians experienced deadly civil wars for more than 18 years.

The security situation in the Somali capital has been deteriorating over the past two years, since the transitional government based In Mogadishu.

The Ethiopian troops helped government forces drive Islamists from power in Mogadishu last December.

Somalia has not had a functioning national government for 16 years.
