Niger State government has earmarked N1.7 billion for the provision of healthcare services for women and children in the state.

The governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu disclosed this in Minna, during a presentation by the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Alhaji Mohammed Bello Mahmud.

Aliyu said N75 million would be spent on the procurement of equipment while the medical city project would gulp about $30 million.

He noted that the maternal and child health project of the Millennium Development Goals from the office of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was a timely intervention, as the state government required about N7.7 billion for its free healthcare scheme.

According to him, only public hospitals would be selected for the NHIS so that they could be provided with more facilities.

The governor mandated the 25 local government areas in the state to establish community clinics and stated that adequate monitoring of hospital facilities would be sustained.

Aliyu reiterated the determination of his administration to transform Niger into one of the three best developed states in the country by the year 2020, and urged the people to support his government to ensure the realisation of the goal.
