Angola: Head of State Honoured for Support for Sports

Luanda — Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, was distinguished Sunday in Luanda with an honourable mention for his support for the development of roller-skate hockey in the country.

The distinction was conveyed by Carlos Alberto Jaime "Calabeto", chairman of the Angolan Skate Hockey Federation (FAP).

This took place during the ceremony of closing of the 7th edition of the International "Ze Du" Roller-Skate Hockey Tournament held in Luanda from August 20-24.

The head of State was received with chants by fans and watched the last games of the competition sponsored by FAP to mark the August 28, the president's birthday.

On the occasion, president José Eduardo dos Santos handed over the trophy to the captain of Portugal's SL Benfica, Valter Neves, that won the competition.

The ceremony, also attended by the minister of Youth and Sports, Marcos Barrica, also delivered trophies to Juventude de Viana, second place, and Oliveirence, third.

Ricardo Barreiros, Benfica's striker, with eight goals was awarded the best scorer trophy. He has thus ousted Juventude de Viana's Kwenha.

Carlos Silva, also SL Benfica's, won the least beaten goalkeeper prize. Viana's Lito and Kwenha got the tournament's "ideal team" mention, as well as Benfica's, Valter Neves and Ricardo Barreiros.

The "ideal team" included Spanish Liceo de la Corunã's Kirro who played for Angola's Petro de Luanda.

The "Zé Du" tournament marked the president's 66th birthday.

In the fifth and last round of the competition, SL Benfica drew with Oliveirence by 2-2.

Following their win over the opponents, SL Benfica competed 13 points.

With this win, unbeaten SL Benfica topple Juventude de Viana (African clubs winner) that come second with 10 points, followed by Oliveirense (8), Andes Talleres of Argentina (6), Petro de Luanda (5) and Angola's under-23 (0).
