Benin — United States Agency for International Develo-pment (USAID) and American Bar Association (ABA), have collaborated with Society for Empowerment of Young Persons (SEYP) in Edo State, to check the rising spate of human-trafficking in the Niger Delta area.
The group attributed the increasing rates of child-trafficking in the area to the alarming rate of unemployment among young persons.The group jointly sponsor young persons facilitated by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP), rehabilitates them by providing employment for them and ensure they save part of their income, to access micro-credit that would enable them set up small scale businesses.
Speaking to reporters in Benin, yesterday, Executive Director of SEYP, Mrs Jeniffer Ero, said the first set of beneficiaries have recently graduated from training in catering and hotel management at the Youth Resource Centre in Benin, facilitated by NAPTIP, while SEYP provided job for them in SEYP Kitchen, a catering facility of the organisation.
She said the organisation took up the challenge of creating jobs for them, so that they would not be tempted into finding their way out of the country for "greener pastures."
She said, "the problems of empowering these young persons after training have always been a recurring issue. Most times after training, only few are able to get employment, others are left at the mercy of the traffickers who deceive them again with the promise of getting them jobs abroad, since they now have vocational skills."
