British Airways manager to Tanzania Saada Juma presents a Sh1.8m dummy cheque to winner of the BA Derby goat race Karen de Brauwer. Brauwer donated the cash prize into Charity fund pool. The event was held at Kenyatta Drive ocean shore in Dar es Salaam last Saturday.
Five out of the seven winners of the Dar es Salaam Goat races held in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, donated their cash prizes to a charity fund pool.
A total of Sh4.8 million was pumped into the charity fund pool from winners who forfeited their prizes in favour of charitable organisations lined up to benefit from the event. Upstream Petroleum Services (T) that won the opening race sponsored by Oryx Oil, gave out Sh600,000 prize money to the charity pool.
Alfred Monja, owner of a goat christened Grand Vitara, donated the Sh1.2 million prize his goat won after finishing first in the Ultimate Security Services sponsored race.
The highest amount was donated by Karen and Stanley de Brauwer, whose goat 'All a Hum,' won the British Airways Derby prized Sh1.8 million. Karen was one of the race organizers.
Southern Sun's Fillies Floric race winner Ian Shapriro, topped up the charity fund pool by donating Sh1.2 million prize money.
However, Stan Kinsch who won the Safmarine Charity Classic, declined to donate the cash prize on the spot, but opted to give it to an undisclosed needy community of his choice.
The weekend event was projected to collect over Sh50 million, according to the organisers of the race. The seven races were sponsored by Oryx Oil, Ultimate Security, Vodacom Tanzania, Tanzania Breweries, British Airways, Southern Sun Hotel and Safmarine Company.
While Vodacom were new entrants, TBL, BA, Southern Sun have been sponsors of the event for eight in a row since the Goat race was inaugurated in 2001. Many other firms contributed towards successful staging of the event.
During last year's edition Sh61.7 milion was collected and a net amount of Sh45.2 million was channeled to selected charitable communitiess in the country.
