Barclays Plc has announced that it would be sponsoring three Mandela Rhodes Scholarships permanently as part of its contribution to the development of homegrown leaders in Africa.

A statement from Barclays Bank Tanzania quoted the Group's head of global community investment, Mr Rachael Barber saying the bank aspired to play a sustainable role in developing Africa's leaders of tomorrow through partnership with the Mandela Rhodes Foundation. "Barclays believes passionately in the future of Africa," Mr Barber said in the statement.

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation aims to build exceptional, home-grown leadership capacity in Africa. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who wish to study for an Honours or Masters degree at an accredited South African university, according to the statement. Barclays made the announcement recently at the foundation's official 90th birthday celebrations for Nelson Mandela at his home in Cape Town. The bank challenged other businesses to join the leadership building bandwagon.

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation was founded in 2003 as a full and equal partnership between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Rhodes Trust, drawing together the legacy of leadership and reconciliation embodied by Nelson Mandela with Cecil John Rhodes' legacy of entrepreneurship and education.
