Kenya: Kitale Council Faces Audit

Nairobi — TransNzoia leaders have welcomed Deputy Prime Minister's Musalia Mudavadi decision to send inspectors to Kitale municipal council.

The leaders led by Democratic Party chairman Mr Joseph Njoroge, Mr Boniface Wanyoike of the Kitale Catholic Justice and Peace Commission and the Ford Kenya youth leader Mr Jackson Muganda said that those involved in corruption should be made to pay.

Mr Mudavadi , the minister for Local Government, ordered a probe on the alleged malpractices at the Kitale municipal council during the 5th anniversary of the late Vice President Michael Wamalwa.

He said inspectors will scrutinise council account records following reports that millions of shillings were unaccounted for.

Mr Mudavadi said that the audit team will hold the exercise in the course of the week.

Last week, council treasurer Mr Wilson Macharia was sent home after failing to account for Sh 8 million from the Local Authority Transfer Fund (LAFT).

Mayor Joshua Werunga is on record saying that the council is facing financial difficulties.

He said the council owes its creditors up to Sh 350 million.
