Kampala — AS the SIFA African Children's choir prepared to perform at a church in the West Side Lawndale in the US on Sunday afternoon, one of their two vans was broken into and their valuable items, worth millions of shillings, stolen.

The choir is made up of 20 Ugandan orphans who perform in the US to raise money for the Glory Children City Project in Masaka district.

The children had spent almost a week in Chicago when they arrived at the City of Refugee Ministries in the Lawndale neighbourhood, according to their coordinator Carrie Harless.

They arrived in two vans just after 4:00pm when, within minutes, someone broke the car lock and stole the backpacks of the two directors.

A GPS system, two laptop computers, a video camera, and the passport of one of the directors were taken from the van, Harless said, adding that the computers contained "irreplaceable" photos and sponsorship information."

"We took the kids to change their uniforms and when I came out to get some things from the van, somebody had busted the lock and cleaned us out."

By Sunday, the Police had not arrested any suspect. As the choir awaited a word on the stolen valuables, Chicago businessman, Timothy Rand, gave them a cheque worth $10,000 on Monday.
