WIFE of Bayelsa State governor, Mrs. Alanyingi Sylva, has commend the wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hajia Turai Yar'Adua for calling the attention of the wives of governors to the urgent need to reduce maternal and child mortality rate as required to meet the millennium development goals.
She made the statement during four-day workshop to reduce maternal mortality in Bayelsa State for Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), yesterday, with the presentation of certificates and TBA kits to the three hundred and fifty participants.
In her closing remarks, wife of the State governor, Mrs. Alanyingi Sylva, whose NGO, Centre for Gender Values and Culture (CGVC) in partnership with the State Ministry of Gender and Social Development and the State Action Committee on Aids (SACA) organised the workshop, urged the Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to put into practice the knowledge they have gained during the programme in assisting expectant mothers in their various communities.
She noted that "this workshop is the first of its kind Bayelsa State will be organising and it is a continuous process and we are assuring mothers of our preparedness to put in place mother and child survival interventions".
Others who made presentations to some participants include Mrs. Augusta Ekewei, wife of the Secretary to the State Government, the Chairman SACA, Dr. Temple Iluma and Dr. Mrs. Josephine Igodo, Permanent Secretary State, Ministry of Gender and Social Development.
Dr. Igbafe enjoined the participants to enlighten pregnant women and advice them to seek proper medical attention in cases with complications to advert unnecessary deaths.
He further urged them to take data collection seriously in their communities for instance the sex of the baby and the date and time of delivery.
