ITALIAN President Giorgio Napolitano has expressed sorrow on the death of President Mwanawasa and pledged his country's continued support towards Zambia's economic development.
President Napolitano described the late President Mwanawasa as an outstanding leader who stood to promote the economic and social development of Zambia.
He said this in Lusaka yesterday in a statement released by the Italian embassy.
"I have learnt with the deepest sorrow of the demise of President Mwanawasa, an active and outstanding leader of political life of Zambia.
"Please accept the expression of my personal condolences and of the Italian nation, and kindly convey these sentiments to the family of President Mwanawasa and the people of Zambia," President Napolitano said.
He said Italy would continue to be close to Zambia not only during this sad moment as it had enjoyed its sincere ties of solidarity and friendship with Zambians.
And Zain Group chief executive officer (CEO), Saad Al Barack has also sent a message of condolences to the first family and Zambians on the death of President Mwanawasa.
Dr Barrack said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that his company would support the acting president of Zambia, Rupiah Banda, as he steers the nation during this troubled time.
"We offer our condolences to the people of Zambia and on the death of His Excellency President Mwanawasa. Our thoughts are with them and with his widow, Mrs Maureen Mwanawasa and the family.
"We offer our support to His Hounour the Vice-President Mr Rupiah Banda as he continues to lead the nation during this solemn time," Dr Barrack said.
