Africa: Catholics Condemn Screening of Big Brother Africa Show

The West African Catholic Bishop's Conference (WACBC) has condemned the broadcasting of Big Brother Africa show, describing it "as an abuse of human dignity for cheap dollars".

Rev. Fr William Avenya, the secretary General of the (WACBC) which has it's Secretariat in Abuja, described the airing of the reality show as a 'tragedy'.

"Big Brother Africa may have some imagined good, but one is hard-pressed to see it."

Avenya told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja.

"I hope that those who are responsible for the soul of our land will take steps to address this development and stop the programme from being aired," Avenya said.

"If the youth are exposed to this dehumanising and impoverished programme in the hope of making some dollar, who should we blame?" he asked.

"One is not surprised that young, unemployed, energetic but desperate Nigerians would be rushing to be admitted into a programme of this nature.

"We keep appealing to the media to be a channel of human enrichment, but one constantly feels that it is bent on propagating a valueless culture.

"As long as money is made, our dignity is effectively manipulated and unsuspecting youths get caught in the web," Avenya added.

He called on parents who encouraged their children to gamble their life for cheap dollars and "the racket of unethical media propaganda", to know that they would account to God for the abuse of their parenthood.(NAN)
