Freetown — Some 13 political supporters at the Balehserah Island in the Kambia district have been charged to court for arson, malicious damage and conspiracy.

The assailants were arrested following a violent August 15 attack on a small island in the district leaving some 12 houses burnt down and property worth millions of leones looted.

Assistant inspector general of police in charge of professional standards Tamba Gbekie had told journalists in Freetown that the incident was as a result of a meeting held by Fallah Suma, APC's coordinator on the Island.

"It was perpetrated by supporters, relatives and friends of the independent councilor Alieu Kanu who pelted stones and other weapons at supporters of the APC," he said.

Police local unit commander in Kambia superintendent Frederick Foday Conteh told Concord Times that the APC coordinator and twelve others were charged to court because the police have enough evidence against them.

Conteh noted that there was no evidence against the independent councilor for him to be charged to court, noting that six of those charged to court were supporters of the independent councilor.

"The matter is being presided over by Magistrates Muddy in Kambia. None of the 13 accused was granted bail when they made their first appearance in court on Monday," he said.

The police have issued warrant of arrest for some fourteen others now in hiding.
