Freetown — Africell mobile company Monday donated ten million leones to the Sierra Leone table tennis association for its children's training camp programme.
Speaking at the ceremony, Africell's chief commercial officer Joe Amara Bangali Jr. said the gesture was not the first, adding that the company has sponsored previous table tennis programmes in the country.
He cited the donation of funds toward the training of coaches in 2007.
"Our commitment towards sports in the recent past has taken the form of the Africell premier league and sponsorship of the national team. Other sporting activities will now benefit from our corporate social responsibility program," he said.
Bangali said they would continue to render support to table tennis by developing the skills of youths and holding national competitions.
Acting president of the table tennis association Abu Bakarr Jalloh lauded Africell for the gesture.
He said the money would go a long way in enhancing the development of the tennis association in the country.
Jalloh said the idea of playing table tennis cannot be overemphasized noting that the training program will commence on Saturday to end in September this year.
UNDP's communications specialist Peter Tayoung said they have renewed their confidence in Africell adding that, "Africell's leadership role in corporate social responsibility is laudable."
