Botswana: Wasbo, SVM Review to End Soon

Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) executive secretary, Kitso Kemoeng is hopeful that a review of the operations of its two structures will be completed soon.

BNSC halted the operations of Women and Sports Botswana (WASBO) and Sports Voluntary Movement (SVM) sometime last year and ordered a review because the council was not satisfied by the way the two bodies conducted their affairs.

Kemoeng believes SVM will be up and running by the second quarter of next year. He could not specify when WASBO will start operations again. The BNSC boss added that SVM had a consultative meeting in June this year and came up with a number of recommendations while WASBO is expected to convene a meeting by the end of this month.

However, the council continues to consult with members at regional level. The council seeks to have stakeholders coming up with ideas for more defined structures. Kemoeng said they ordered a review, as it was clear that some things were not done properly at WASBO and SVM.

"We were not happy with the way the structures were run but we cannot blame the members. May be we at the council also did not do enough to familiarise ourselves with the structures," Kemoeng explained.

The initial mandate of SVM was to increase, encourage and reward voluntarism in sport. "It looks like when the movement started, people had different expectations about it and when their expectations were not met, many of them dropped out and that was something that alerted us that something was not right," he said. Kemoeng added that there is need to define a volunteer.

WASBO is going through a review because of the same problems. WASBO was formed with the mandate to increase women participation in sports. Kemoeng said there is need to revisit the mandate because it was not fully followed. He explained that there is a need to align the structures with other BNSC structures.

He stated that previously, WASBO and SVM were operating well but somewhere along the line, things went wrong.

"There is need to revisit and review structures from time to time to align them with the current situation," he said. SVM was formed in 2001 while WASBO was formed in 1997.
