South Africa/Nigeria: Josephs Replaces Injured Fernandez

27 August 2008

Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana has forced to replace Rowen Fernandez for the 2010 World Cup-Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Super Eagles because the Germany-based minder has not fully recovered from injury.

Because of the late development, Moeneeb Josephs has been brought in for the crucial second leg qualifier against Nigeria to be played at Telkom Park Stadium, Port Elizabeth on September 6.

Explaining this, Bafana team manager, Sipho Nkumane, says initial reports suggested that Fernandez was fit for selection, but DSC Arminia Bielefeld FC's doctor has since informed the national team that the former Amakhosi minder is not medically fit after his injury that kept him from selection against Australia in London last week.

"Rowen is therefore no longer in the team to face Nigeria. As a result of this, Bafana Bafana team doctor, Ephraim Nematswerani, is in contact with his counterpart at the player's club in Germany, arranging for a second opinion on the player over the reported injury.

"This follow up procedure will be conducted in Germany by a doctor of our choice in line with Fifa rules," says Nkumane.
