South Africa: Maritzburg Need Victory

27 August 2008

Maritzburg United are determined to begin their campaign in the PSL on a positive note this season when they play Ajax Cape Town in the Absa Premiership opener at Athlone Stadium tonight.

PSL returnees United were relegated to the First Division two seasons ago and this time around club manager Quinton Jetto remains confident that his team will not go back to the lower ranks.

Speaking to KickOff.com shortly after arriving in Cape Town yesterday, Jetto said they intended to lay a good foundation for their campaign in PSL this season by picking up three points against the Urban Warriors.

"Life is tough in the First Division and we can't afford to go back there again, so it is very important that we win our first game so as to boost our confidence.

"Our coach Gordon Igesund has been here before and his experience in the PSL has rubbed off on the players. We have set ourselves realistic goals and aim to finish in the top 10. The three points from Ajax Cape Town will lay a good foundation for us to achieve success this season."

Jetto said the squad has a clean bill of health.

Besides having signed Igesund, United have also raided the transfer market for more experienced players.

Gary Goldstone, Tico-Tico Bucuane and Dikulu Bageta have all arrived in Pietermaritzburg with PSL experience.

Ajax Cape Town will, however, be looking forward to use the game against Maritzburg United to wipe away their tears after losing the Absa Premiership league title on the last day of the past season.

Having lost Dominic Isaacs, Russel Mwafulirwa, Nathan Paulse and Bryce Moon during the off season, coach Craig Rosslee will have to come up with a strong team if he hopes to maintain their good form from last season.

Ajax boss John Comitis has told KickOff.com that he is expecting Cameroon midfielder Eyong Enoh to arrive back in the country from Holland today after attending trials with Ajax Amsterdam.

Enoh was one of the best performers among the Urban Warriors last season and if fit to play, Rosslee could look to partner him with Clifford Ngobeni to win the midfield battle against United.
