28 August 2008

A suspect, Kaigama Jibiko, who allegedly machete three people to death and injured seven others on Monday in Jakusko, Yobe State, has confessed taking poisoned cannabis when committing the crime.

In his confessional statement yesterday at the headquarters of the state Police Command, Jibiko said his friends poisoned the Indian hemp which made him to lose his senses.

"I was completely mad, I didn't know what I did. How can I kill or inflict injury on somebody deliberately when I know that it is against the dictates of my religion?" he asked.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said Jibiko, an accountant with Jakusko Local Government Area, went berserk on Monday and attacked 10 people with machete, killing three and injuring seven others.

In tears, Jibiko admitted that he was addicted to Indian hemp and drugs."I started smoking hemp since my school days at the Federal Polytechnic Damaturu. I am an HND holder," he said.

The suspect claimed that his friends, who had envied him because of his relatively successful life, were responsible for his tragic situation.

The seven people injured, including members of his immediate family, were hospitalised at the General Hospital. Potiskum.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the state House of Assembly has paid a condolence visit to the victims and their relations.
