A 44 year old personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Abraham Odartey Lamptey, has been enstooled as the Chief Fisherman "Woleiatse" of Osu Klottey, a suburb of Accra.
Nii Akpapah, Osu Akwashontse, out-dooring the new Woleiatse in a colourful ceremony advised the newly-installed chief to associate himself well with the fishermen, to enable him identify their problems, to enhance the fishing profession.
He further advised him to ensure a close collaboration between him and the other Woleiatsemei, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, in making beaches one of the cleanest to attract tourists and Ghanaians alike.
Nii Akpapah noted that there should be stringent measures, to prevent people from using the beaches as places of convenience, as there are a number of public toilets scattered all over.
The Akwashontse emphasized that it had come to the notice of the Traditional Council, that some people have been dumping refuse on the sea shores and in the sea, and warned such people to desist from it, as anyone caught would face the full rigours of the law.
Under the stool name, Nii Odartey Osro Akuma IV, Abraham Odartey Lamptey pledged allegiance to the stool, Nii Akpapah, Osu Asafoitse, and the Osu Mantse, and promised to give the fishing profession a facelift.
He said "it is time members of the fishing profession are provided with identity cards to able to be recognised, and integrated into the mainstream of service providers, such as the National Health Insurance Scheme and Social Security (NHIL) and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT)."
Nii Odartey Osoro noted that it had come to his notice that storage facilities were a major problem for fishermen, and promised that efforts to solve that would be provided.
With regards to the poor drainage system of the Osu Klottey lagoon, Nii Osro disclosed that discussions were far advanced with the appropriate authorities, for the construction of a proper drainage system to ease the flow of water.
He urged the fishermen to start paying their income taxes.
