Zambia: Bandits Snatch K842 Million

28 August 2008

FOUR robbers with two AK 47 rifles on Monday afternoon raided a bank in Lusaka and got way with K842 million.

The four entered InvesTrust Bank at Arcades shopping mall like ordinary customers but later produced the guns and ordered everyone in the bank to lie down.

Commissioner of Police, Francis Kabonde confirmed the robbery in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.

Mr Kabonde said the police sentry assigned to man the bank had been picked up to assist with investigations.

He said at the time of the robbery, the sentry had gone for lunch earlier than usual but the matter would be investigated to establish the truth.

Mr Kabonde said after entering the bank, one of the robbers went straight to where the money was while others kept vigil to stop anybody from raising alarm.

He said that the K842 million was taken to the bank on Friday last week by a security firm and that it was supposed to be counted the day the robbers struck.

Mr Kabonde wondered how criminals could go straight where the bag of money was, saying the police suspected it was an inside job.

Mr Kabonde said no one was hurt during the robbery and that the criminals sped away in a Toyota Corolla.

He appealed to police officers to be alert at all times especially during this time when Zambians were mourning the Head of State.
