The union netball league got underway at the TCC Chang'ombe club in Dar es Salaam with holders Jeshi Stars posting a 39-23 goals win over Zanzibar Prisons in the opener.
In the second match of the day Zanzibar's JKU stunned Mainland's JKT Mbweni by 35-34 in a nerve-jangling thrilling clash.
In the opening match Stars took a 18-12 half time lead. Shooter Grace Daudi was the toast of Stars as she pumped in 36 goals while team mate Agnes Semkonda did the rest of the damage.
Kazija Salum and Nadra Mohamed of the losing side scored 17 and six goals respectively.
In the second match JKT Mbweni and JKU tied at 17 at half time mark. JKU emerged winners of the match that was closely contested, keeping spectators spellbound throughout. The winners' shooters Zainabu Shabani and Pili Peter played impressively to keep JKT Mbweni at bay.
The league continues today with matches involving Prisons Morogoro vs Jeshi Stars, JKT Mbweni vs Mafunzo, and Nyuki vs Zimamoto in the morning session. The championship was opened by African Stars Entertainment (ASET) director Asha Baraka who urged the Tanzania Netball Association (CHANETA) to seek out netball enthusiasts to sponsor the game.
