Umuahia — Nigeria Union of Journalists plans to convoke a meeting of Media stakeholders in the country with a view to discussing standard and acceptable conditions of service for journalists in the country.
The Vice President of the NUJ, Zone C (South East). Mr. Ambrose Nwachukwu, who disclosed this in Umuahia, said that those expected to participate in the special conference scheduled to hold in Calabar, Cross River state, include executives of Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) and Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON).
Others are Information Commissioners from the 36 states, Chief Press Secretaries, Chief Executives of Media Houses, media related non-governmental organizations and representatives of other interest groups.
Nwachukwu explained that a standard and implementable conditions of service for journalists have become expedient in view of the ever rising risks, hazards and demands on the journalism profession in a choking socio-economic environment.
According to him, the union believes that dialogue among media stakeholders rather than confrontation, is the best strategy for fashioning a better condition of service for journalists in the country.
Nwachukwu regretted that most journalists were being poorly paid as some media housae were yet to fully appreciate that journalists deserve a standard level of remuneration for their services in an inflation-ridden society.
