The Cameroon Cricket Federation in collaboration with the Africa Cricket Association and the International Cricket Council from August 22 to 27 carried out a cricket academy for cricket players in Cameroon dubbed "Bringing cricket to Cameroon, Empowering young people".
The training carried out by a level 3 cricket coach from the ACA1-ICC is aimed at fast-tracking selected Cameroonian national team players in the senior, under 17 and under 15 categories in preparation for upcoming international competitions.
According to the course instructor, Olisa Egwuatu, the training comprised both theoretical and practical lessons on the field. The practical training dwelled on notions such as bowling, batting, fielding, wicket keeping and fitness in cricket. Whereas the theoretical part focused on mental psychology as the expert said cricket is more of brain work than physical strength.
Olisa Egwuatu who is in his third visit to Cameroon said the level of cricket has improved significantly in the country and more people are getting involved.
According to the president of the cricket federation, Victor Agbor-Nso, Cameroon alongside Mali were asked to carry out the training after Cameroon failed to attend an ICC tournament in South Africa due to lack of preparation. He disclosed that competitions for the Cup of Cameroon and cricket national championship will speed-up after the academy and that the inter-school tournament initiated at the beginning of the season, will equally continue with the resumption of schools this September.
Recently, two Cameroonian cricket players were invited to an academy in Abuja-Nigeria where they received training in wicket keeping and spin-bowling. He also said Cameroon will be taking part in a cricket tournament in Nigeria for the first time as a national team.
