Uganda: Fighting Erupts At Countries' Border

29 August 2008

Heavy fighting erupted yesterday morning between the DR Congo government forces and rebels of renegade commander, Gen. Laurent Nkunda near the Ugandan border district of Kisoro.

The gunfire exchange in Busanza inside DRC, about 10-15km from Kisoro on the Uganda border, began when Gen. Nkunda's forces attempted to overrun a government barracks, security officials told Daily Monitor last evening.

UPDF 2nd Division spokesman Kiconco Tabaro said the army had deployed along the border to avoid a spill over into Uganda.
