29 August 2008

Sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi has commended the sprit and togetherness exhibited by the Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa).

Bakkabulindi, who is also Uspa patron, was speaking during the memorial service for 26 fallen scribes held at Christ the King in Kampala.

"This shows the acquaintance and unity that flows in this association. It's not only about remembering them but also honouring their work before they passed on," Bakkabulindi told the congregation that filled the Church.

Main celebrant and newly appointed Christ the King Parish Priest Monsignor Gerald Kalumba also praised the spirit behind the annual prayer held on August 28.

"The fallen colleagues are resting happily and appreciating the work you do for their families," said Rev Kalumba said.

Last Saturday, the scribes' body held a road safety campaign in Lugazi to commemorate their fallen comrades under the theme - A Seat Belt Can Save Life. Francis Batte Junior, Leo Kabunga, Simon Peter Ekarot and Kenneth Matovu, all former sports scribes passed away in a motor accident in Lugazi from Jinja in 2001.

The campaign was backed by City Tyres, National Insurance Corporation (NIC) and uganda telecom and also attracted members of the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (Utoda).
