Kigali — MTN employees were on Wednesday addressed by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on matters pertaining to voting.
This is part of the awareness exercise set by NEC to sensitize the general public across the country on the necessity of voting.
"We came to MTN because it is one of the biggest institutions in the country that will participate in the forth coming elections," said Betty Mukarumongi Basinga, a NEC representative.
Mukarumongi said that the awareness exercise is part of the 'Voter Education Test' that NEC is carrying out.
"The general public needs to be aware of why they have to vote, its importance and the benefits that come with a voting public," she said.
"Employees in both the public and private sector are too busy to follow TV and radio programs that are very informative on the elections," she explained.
According to Mukarumongi, through moving from one busy institution to another, NEC is able to address and give advice to employees on the requirements needed to vote such as voters' cards and the right dates of voting. According to Petero Kigama, an employee of MTN, the turn up for the meeting was impressive.
"Seventy percent of our employees attended the meeting which is something rare." Kigame said, adding, "This implies that great awareness has been created among the employees."
The MTN employees were also encouraged to sensitize members of their families including their domestic workers. He said that there will be no excuse for any poor turn up for work during the voting period.
Every region in the country is represented by a team of NEC officials. The awareness exercise set off immediately after the official launch of the Parliamentary campaigns on the 25th of this month.
