Liberia: Govt. Must Fix Its Broken Justice System

Monrovia — New United States Ambassador accredited to Liberia, Ms. Linda Thomas Greenfield says the Government of Liberia must fix its "broken justice system" to sustain peace and stability in the country.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield said the government must train and develop its civil service as well as its security sector in order to keep the peace.

The U.S. envoy made the assertions Wednesday when she presented her Letters of Credence to President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.

She said all Liberians must fight corruption which, she observed, continues to 'eat away' democracy like cancer.

The U.S. diplomat pointed out that Liberians must work together to forge a truly national identity to overcome the divisions of the past.

She challenged the government to create opportunities for the people of Liberia in order to tap the skills, energies and talents of the citizenry.

She said with strong commitment and dedication to governance, the government must demonstrate respect for the rule of law, eschew corruption and unite everyone in a society of equal opportunity.

Amb. Thomas-Greenfield assured the government that during her stay in Liberia, she would work diligently to continue the strong engagements of the United States in the country, and to support President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's efforts to keep Liberia moving in the right direction.

The U.S. envoy revealed that Liberia has the second largest USAID program in Africa after Sudan, adding "in a country with only three-and-a half million people, that support has an enormous impact on the health and education of Liberia's population and the improvement and reform of its government institutions."

She assured that her government would continue its support to the Liberia National Police, the judiciary, educational and health sectors as well as roads and infrastructural development, among others.

Responding, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf pledged government's support and commitment in working with the U.S. envoy to ensure that she succeeds during her stay in Liberia.

She recounted the numerous assistance the U.S. government has provided and continues to provide the people of Liberia, especially by helping to restore peace and stability.

President Johnson-Sirleaf also expressed government's gratitude to the United States government for re-opening the Peace Corps office in Liberia.

The Liberian leader assured the new U.S. envoy of better cooperation and promised that transparency and accountability would be the hallmarks of her government.
