Nigeria: Govt is Committed to Sky Liberalisation , Says Demuren

29 August 2008

Lagos — Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren, has said Nigeria is committed to the liberalisation of its skies, in line with the Yamoussoukro Accord.

"Nigeria is committed to liberalisation of its skies and would remain at the forefront of efforts to actualise full implementation of the Yamoussoukro Accord in the continent," he said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Johannesburg.

Demuren was in Johannesburg to attend the just concluded 14th Aviation and Allied Business Leadership Conference.

Participants at the meeting had decried slow implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision (YD), which calls for liberalisation of skies in the continent by removing restrictive Bi-lateral agreements on air travel between African countries.

They noted that 20 years after the Accord was adopted by many African states, only few regional blocs have opened up their skies.

Many speakers called for speeding up of its implementation, arguing that it was Africa's the only coordinated aviation policy which had the potential to move the continent.

Demuren said Nigeria believed in the Yamoussoukro decision and was spearheading its implementation in West Africa, so as to make the region a single domestic market.
