Dakar — The Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for West Africa, Mr. Said Djinnit, ended a two-day visit to Mauritania where he met with senior Government officials, members of the diplomatic community and representatives from U.N. agencies to discuss the political situation in the country and to review developments since his last visit there earlier this month.
The Special Representative met General Mohammad Ould Abdel Aziz to whom he reiterated the concerns of the United Nations on the current political situation and the need to restore constitutional order in the country. He also had the opportunity to meet with President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdellahi during his visit. He further met a wide range of political actors, including political parties, members of Parliament, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the President of the Senate, members of Government, civil society and trade unions. With all his interlocutors, he exchanged views on ways and means toward an early restoration of constitutional order, as called for by the UN Security Council and the international community at large.
The Special Representative will continue his efforts, in conjunction with the African Union and other international partners.
