Eritrea: Cabinet of Ministers Concludes Meeting

Asmara — The Eritrean Cabinet of Ministers concluded its two-day meeting following extensive deliberations on multi-faceted domains.

In its sessions last night and today, the Eritrean Cabinet of Ministers discussed the programs implemented in different sectors and assessed their progress and challenges. The meeting took note of the infrastructure facilities that need to be put in place in tourism destination sites, the projects under implementation at the private and governmental levels, as well as the number of domestic and foreign tourists, as part of efforts to harness the nation's tourism potentials. It also held deliberations on activities to publicize the existing tourism potentials, the investments and contacts made to promote the all-round development of tourism services. The meeting further stressed the need to exert coordinate efforts towards reinforcing the people's gratifying tradition of neatness and related natural and human resources.

Reviewing the operational methods being introduced aimed at ensuring efficient and effective management in land, sea and air transport, as well as the campaigns undertaken to ensure traffic safety, the control mechanism and technology employed to this end, as well as the laws and regulations adopted in all transport sectors, the meeting conducted extensive discussion regarding these tasks. Also conducting discussion regarding the accommodation services of national and international ships, ensuring efficient air transport, it assessed the work accomplished to ensure reliable communication service, and ways of further strengthening such activities.

The Ministerial Cabinet went on to hold deliberations on the implementation of projects regarding construction and renovation of strategic feeder roods, bridges, reservoirs, water diversion schemes and irrigation infrastructure facilities. Besides, the meeting discussed the progress of the implementation of housing projects in different areas and the prevailing challenges vis-à-vis pressing development demands, the supply of contraction materials and national housing development plan. It further noted the need to undertake infrastructure and housing construction projects on the basis of available resources and the objective situation and in line with the programs that require priority attention.

Moreover, it took note of the five-year action plan (2009-2013) mapped out over the past 10 months aimed at ensuring social justice. The action plan deals with infrastructure development, the growth and production capacity of pertinent institutions, as well as human resource development, policy on population growth rate, statistical and demographic information system, among others.

As regards activities in the financial sector, the Cabinet of Ministers conducted deliberations on budget administration, customs, collection of tax and fees and the task undertaking in budge preparation for 2008. Following discussion on fostering international cooperation on the basis of ensuring equitable partnership and ownership of national programs, the meeting mapped out future action plan.

Assessing the effectiveness of different support and rehabilitation programs to families of fallen heroes, disabled citizens, orphans, needy nationals and the like, the meeting positively appraised the outcome of such undertakings in promoting social security to the beneficiaries. In this respect, the meeting emphasized the need to channel these activities towards enabling the concerned nationals become self-supporting.

On the expansion of health services, the Ministerial Cabinet took note of the encouraging achievement registered in providing and expanding equitable service in all corners of the country. Noting that the greater portion of the population has access to reliable health care and medication, the meeting assessed that Eritrea ranks among those African countries south of the Sahara which managed to provide the necessary health service to the entire population. In this connection, it underlined the need to reinforce the efforts being made for still greater achievement.

Furthermore, the meeting held deliberations on the work outcome registered in the domain of education, including the expansion of educational opportunities, upgrading the teaching-learning process, encouraging active student participation, promoting illiteracy eradication programs and strengthening managerial capacity in the sector, as well as properly addressing other related matters.

The Cabinet of Ministers concluded its meeting putting forth a number of proposals.
