Angola: President Announces Major Development for Malanje

30 August 2008

Malange — The Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, Saturday in northern Malange province announced that the region will gain a "greater development" in coming months.

He said this will be achieved through the implementation of farming and social projects, among which those of Pungo-Andongo locality, some 100 kilometres of the provincial capital city.

"There are specific programmes prepared for the province which will be implemented after the electoral campaign and elections," said president José Eduardo dos Santos.

The head of State was addressing thousands of people that gathered at the government's palace square, in the light of his few-hour visit to Malange province.

According to Dos Santos, a greater point of economic and agro-industry development, as well as an irrigated perimeter of some 13,000 hectares will be built in Pungo-andongo locality, for the development of agriculture and cattle-breeding of over 400,000 hectares.

"If necessary, one hectare per person, which means 400,000 jobs", stressed president José Eduardo dos Santos, adding that in this area the farmers and entrepreneurs will implement their undertakings, and plots measuring 2,500 hectares each will be demarcated for the development of agriculture and cattle-breeding activity.

"This is not a dream (...), it can become true after the elections, it depends on us, would the residents of Malange province will turn their land into a greater granary of Angola", added the president of the Republic.

José Eduardo dos Santos, who is also leader of the ruling MPLA party, stressed that his party wants Malange to become Angola's biggest granary, whose products can be transformed into manufacturing goods.
