Angola: Minister Lays First Stone for Building King Ekuikui II Monument

31 August 2008

Bailundo — The Angolan Culture minister, Boaventura Cardoso, on Saturday in Bailundo Municipality, central Huambo Province, laid the first stone for the construction of a monument in tribute of King Ekuikui II, as part of the national programme of valorising the country's historical personalities.

Besides the monument, Boaventura Cardoso also announced the construction, in the coming times, of the Mbalundo cultural centre, as well as the re-classification of the 1º de Maio Square.

According to the minister, the building of these two cultural structures is intended to have pedagogic character for the coming generations.

The minister also revealed that the works are to be concluded in the next six months.

On the occasion, the current king of Bailundo, Ekuikui IV, praised the initiative of the government, adding that this will valorise one of the most distinguished sovereigns of the former Bailundo Kingdom.

"I am very satisfied with the fact that Ekuikui II has been chosen to symbolise the official start of monuments construction countrywide", declared the current king of Bailundo.

Ekuikui II reigned in Bailundo Kingdom between 1876 to 1890, after being preceded by 19 other kings.
